Lesson 4: Visual languageActivity 4: Movement
Part A: What kind of movement (motion lines or line of action) is implied in the above images? Compare the role lines play in achieving a sense of movement in both.
Part B:
- On a piece of paper, try drawing motion lines that indicate the speed or direction of a simple shape (for example, a bouncing ball).
- Find a frame from one of your three favorite films which shows movement. On a sheet of paper, swiftly sketch the line(s) of action or motion lines that provide the sense of movement in the image.
Part C:
- Draw a character from your story performing different movements. Use line of action to guide each pose.
- Combine line of action in a character with motion lines to create a scene with lots of movement from your story. Don’t be shy with your use of lines and shapes!

- For the cars I see hostility, the way the 2 look at each other seems like they are in a competition. The lines also help convey that, in the way that they are slightly curved but mostly strait, while the cars are rounder, helps us focus on the cars. Remi moves fluid like, snake like even. He has rounder features, and moves in curves and circles. This shows creativity and playfulness, and helps visualize his character.(32 votes)
- Motion lines for Lightning McQueen and action lines for Remy.(7 votes)
- I see many motions, cars, streets, directions, and funny.(1 vote)
- For the cars, I see competition, McQueen trying to beat Jackson. In the mouse ( rat sounds hostile), I see caution, like trying not to be seen or heard.(9 votes)
- so this pixar in a box is so much fun(8 votes)
- I love pixar and disney!(2 votes)
Los dibujos representan perfectamente la locomoción que tiene una rata cuando camina, olfatea, y se asoma en un lugar.(7 votes) - the cars are trying to go very fast and the rat is trying to be nimble and quick(6 votes)

- I think the motion comes from the lines it's make it seem like your actually in the car driving it and dramatic and it adds emotion(4 votes)
